there is more to the story about me telling my kids things. basically, i was more candid and detailed as they got older. sometimes i'd talk to them separately, sometimes together. at age 9, i explained to my daughter that her body would soon be changing as a result of puberty, and that as a result of these changes, boys would start to look at her differently, and talk to her different. the discussions developed and went on from there. a year later, i told them both the story about how i lost my virginity, www.youtube.com and how crap it made me feel, and the hangups it gave me. i wanted them to realise that its not just sex, that people we are lovers with can have a power over our emotions as well. also that, whoever you lose your virginity with is a person whose name you will remember for the rest of your life. so be sure not to give something so precious to someone who does not deserve to be remembered forever. i gave them lots of advice, lots of warning, well before either of them were sexually active. we still talk about it now. my son, now 19, STILL hears this refrain every time he leaves to go out drinking for the night: "don't get in any fights, don't get arrested, and don't get anybody pregnant". so far, so good.
